ART, CULTURE & LOVE
Now that the new website is up and running, it still has some refining to do. A great way to fill you all in with what’s been going on is to share with you some lovely time to celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The first celebration of this kind in the community on Bainbridge Island was so memorable. The Filipino American Community Hall was the host location and although small, it was mighty for this celebration. The weather could not have cooperated better than all Saturday, June 2nd.
Proudly sharing time and space with Dr. Méré Tari Søvick and Melanesian Women Today inside the center, there were so many beautiful items to show all who attended. From traditional art to contemporary styles, the talent was obvious. Although I virtually met and communicated with Méré over the past couple of years, it was the first time that I saw her in person and the warmth and love shined through. Originally from Vanuatu, she founded Melanesian Women Today to bring her heart for care to the forefront.
Baskets, bilums (string bags) and books were presented to all – young and old. It was a joy to see so many people from Bainbridge learning about people with such rich history and diversity.
Speaking of books, a huge shout of thanks to friends who donated a large number of good reads for young people. I just learned that arrangements are in the planning stages by Melanesian Women Today for the books to go to two schools in remote parts of Solomon Islands.
What was difficult for me was the inability to attend PacFest in Hawaii this year. It is a major display of ALL the variety of cultures for 10 days. So many friends were able to represent their countries. Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Polynesia, Micronesia, Hawaii ——-
The list is long. Check out how Papua New Guinea opened their part of the opening ceremonies.

Also acknowledged are the collaborative efforts of Colleen Kinnon Huck and Liz Finin and here’s to next year and another successful event on Bainbridge. Did I mention this beautiful Pacific Northwest location before? You bet and thank you for the care of the forests.
